In the early 1800s, relatives of Job and Jacob Huguely of Virginia began to arrive in middle Tennessee, settling in Wilson County. Their families had moved to Virginia from Pennsylvania, where they had come into the country. The family was originally from Lorraine, a province of northeastern France, and were described as 'Palatines', a group of German-speaking people from the region around the Rhine that Queen Anne had invited to settle in her colonies. Their family prospered and grew in middle Tennessee. Many variations of their name are found in that area through the 1800s to present, with one of the most common being Hewgley.
