Joseph's mother and father were both from North Carolina, though he was born in TN (per 1880 & 1900 census). There are no Chester's enumerated in the 1810 Tennessee census. In the 1820 census (a few years before Joseph was born), there are several Chesters born in North Carolina living in Tennessee. They include a John Chester Sr. and a John Chester Jr. in Hickman County TN, a David Chester in Williamsport, Maury County, and three Johns and a William in Stewart County TN.
In the 1860 Census there is a John Chester, age 63 and born in North Carolina in the same area as Joseph - the Danielsville Post Office area of the middle district of Dickson County TN. John's wife's name is Mary; she is 58 and was born in South Carolina. There are five other Chesters in their home, all born in Tennessee: Jacob(26), Elizabeth(22), Roda(18), Sarah(38), and Thomas(14). It seems a strong possibility that this is Joseph's family.

Mary is still in the home with Joseph in the 1880 census. In the 1900 census Joseph is living with his son J.L's family. Assuming that Mary died sometime in between 1880 and 1900 (the 1890 census records for TN were destroyed by fire).
There is a Joseph Chester who fought in the Civil War. Our Joseph is the only Joseph Chester who appears in the census records of 1850, 1860, or 1870.
