FOLLOWING ARE ITEMS TAKEN FROM THE CIRCUIT COURT RECORDS OF WILSON

29 September, 1843.(p. 491)Circ. Court Records 1842-1844
Lewis Hugueley charged with an assault on Joseph S. Lane. He was aided by Samuel Hamilton. On the third day of September, 1843, said Hugueley and Hamilton did unlawfully, maliciously, and feloniously make an assault on a part of the left ear of the said Joseph S. Lane. They then and there unlawfully, maliciously, and feloniusly bit off his ear. The said Joseph S. Lane was disfigured to his great damage.

From Vivian Eakes Hull:
I had heard this story from my cousin Lynn Houston Harrison, who had heard it from our grandmother, Alta Myrtle Smith EAKES. Family stories said that Lewis Hunter was forever getting in fights, "quite a scrapper" and that on occasions had fought six or seven men. This incident was related as one in which several were interfering with the fight between Hewgley and Lane and the two rolled under a wagon to avoid the others. In the skirmish, the ear was biten off. It is told that the case was thrown out of court due to lack of evidence, and that the evidence was missing because Lewis H. Hewgley ATE it......I have not yet confirmed the outcome of this charge but I hope to find at a later date......
The will of William Wray, recorded November 7, 1862, names his wife Martha P. Wray and their children, one of whom is Margaret A. Hewgley and states that her husband Lewis H. Hewgley is to have no control over her part of whatever willed to her. (Note that their marriage record shows Lewis W. Hewgley but the will shows Lewis H. Hewgley.) ...
